<image:caption>Khadmallah, Wilson, Loakin, Majdi, Jawad. Khadmallah is a mother and tea vendor. Wilson and Loakin, young boys, live on the streets and are best friends. Majdi is a civil servant and likes to race pigeons with his son. Jawad is a Sufi Rastafarian resistance volunteer and rides a motorbike. Before Khartoum, they do not know each other. Likely, they pass each other on the street – once or twice – but their paths do not cross. ‘Me as an audience, really, not as a producer, as an audience,’ says Talal, ‘– for me, watching the film, watching all the footage and material [...] I feel it was important for my life, the rest of my life, because the film does not only show what I went through. The diversity of the characters showed me what I didn't go through.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rania watches Khartoum twice: at home alone, before the event, and at the Jali Weekender, with us all. ‘I remember during the movie, many Sudanese were in the room. Many of them, they really cry, cry a lot during,’ says Rania. ‘So it is not just normal movie you can watch in cinema.’ Rania remembers Jawad’s remembering. He mentions a bus ride, shared with a girl from his college: she offered him an earphone and they listened to a song, together. Sweet with youth and possibility. He speaks with his eyes closed and a smile tugs at his lips. ‘So even now we are in a war, we are in this situation, we’re really holding our memory. We’re really holding our country in this memory, inside us,’ says Rania.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A conversation off stage has laid the foundations for another conversation on stage. ‘Sorry guys, if you were sitting behind us, we were talking a lot,’ says Sean and he reaches an apologetic hand to the back of the room. Their chatter is worthwhile: Sean is learning a lot from Bemz, from his thoughts on masculinity and fatherhood. Ryan is in need of conversation, too. And, the film’s turmoil presents a moment for him to speak with his two friends. A trust like that carries him through; and it carries Bemz, too. ‘I pray everyone finds that, if they don’t already have it,’ he says.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Matt’s partner has a daughter. Together, they sit and make up games. ‘I love that there’s no bounds to [her] creativity,’ he says. Then, he offers another act for joy: ‘I always go to the cinema by myself,’ and Sean raises his hand in agreement, nodding. ‘I feel like a kid again,’ Matt says. We cannot help but think of the kids of LESPRI and The Heart is a Muscle: their camcorders and plastic dinosaurs in hand. Bemz thinks of his kids, too. ‘Going on the first holiday with them [...] I’m just smiling even thinking about that,’ he says. But, there’s more: ‘I just play FIFA.’ Sean slaps him on the back, knowing and agreeing. The room shakes their heads. Mock tutting and teeth sucking, they protest. ‘Hear me out, hear me out, hear me out on this.’ When Bemz plays FIFA, he zones out. Sort through the day’s threads. Matt and Sean agree - they like their video games, too.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Halina speaks again, and the child calls out, ‘Mama,’ once or twice. Halina remembers, as a child, the racism her father faced in Scotland; her brothers now live abroad and don’t wish to return to Scotland due to this racism. It’s difficult to speak about: Rhea presses her hand against Halina’s back and in this, she is held and that holding is witnessed by us all. And so, Halina, with Ica Headlam, wanted to create a collective which truly listened to and empathised with BPOC communities – We Are Here Scotland does so.</image:caption>

<image:title>2025 Programme - THE HEART IS A MUSCLE + Short + Discussion - Sean Focus</image:title>
<image:caption>Sean Focus is a Zimbabwean-born, Edinburgh-based artist shaping a sound that lives between continents. Fusing afro-pop, hip hop and dancehall with rich storytelling and undeniable rhythm, his music reflects a life spent navigating movement, memory and identity — and translating all of it into high-voltage sound. He first broke through with early singles on Charlie Sloth’s Grimey Limey label in 2020, carving out a signature style full of texture, energy and emotional depth. Since then, he’s been steadily building — both sonically and in community — becoming one of the most exciting voices emerging from Scotland’s diverse hip hop scene. In 2022, his feature on Bemz’s Raging Bull introduced Sean to wider audiences, as the two performed together across key festival stages including TRNSMT, Riverside Festival and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. That live momentum laid the groundwork for international appearances — including a standout set at Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi and a high-energy performance at SXSW London in 2025. This year, Sean’s latest single Desire has earned strong support at home and abroad, and caught the attention of BBC 1Xtra’s Theo Johnson, who spotlighted him as a Step Up Artist. With upcoming performances locked in for the Edinburgh Fringe and a return to Lake of Stars, Sean continues to bring new meaning to Afrofusion — music made for those who’ve moved, adapted, and still carry the pulse of home.</image:caption>

<image:title>2025 Programme - THE HEART IS A MUSCLE + Short + Discussion - Bemz</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in Nigeria, raised in South London, and later moving to Stranraer, Scotland, Bemz discovered his voice in unexpected places. From freestyle sessions with his brother at 15 to studying sound production and releasing his SAY Award–nominated debut album Saint of Lost Causes in 2020, his journey highlights the expansive cultural reach of rap. Supported by outlets like Clash, The Skinny, and BBC platforms including Radio 1, 1Xtra, and 6 Music, his raw and emotionally charged music is strikingly honest. He has made the SAY Award shortlist, won the Scottish Music Awards’ Sound of Scotland title, toured with The Snuts, supported Example, CASISDEAD, and Grandmaster Flash, debuted at TRNSMT, and headlined sold-out shows at SWG3’s Warehouse and Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s. He’s also impressed with performances at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Tallinn Music Week, and festivals like Kelburn Garden Party and Youth Beatz. His EP Nova’s Dad revealed his introspective side, exploring themes of family and self-acceptance, while high-energy tracks like “G.O.M (Gyallie On Me)” and “Rowdy,” a collaboration with Paisley’s Washington, showcase his evolving sound. A standout achievement of 2024 was founding M4 Festival in Glasgow with DF Concerts, celebrating Scotland’s diverse music scene and headlining its debut event to a packed crowd. In addition to the main festival, Bemz regularly organises smaller M4 events, spotlighting up-and-coming Scottish talent and providing a vital platform for emerging artists across hip hop, rap, grime, and R&B. His collaborations continue to elevate his profile, including teaming up with EA Sports for the launch of EA Sports FC 25 alongside Celtic FC and traveling to Euro 2024 with JD Sports to present for their channels. With new music on the horizon and a support slot at a sold-out Barrowlands show for the acclaimed jazz collective corto.alto, Bemz’s trajectory continues to rise with no signs of slowing down.</image:caption>
