As part of the programme, we will be screening the Scottish Premiere of Denise Fernandes' Hanami, a dreamlike coming-of-age story set on the volcanic islands of Cape Verde.
The screening will be followed by a creative workshop facilitated by Keisha Rowe. Participants will engage in reflective discussion and free writing based on responses to the film, utilising collage and carbon transfer printing to build images inspired by their words with themes of dreams and apparitions.
The workshop is free to attend, but booking is required and spaces limited to 15 participants.
What to Expect
During the screening, you will be asked take note of any striking quotes, phrases, or themes that resonate with you. You may want to document this within your own personal notebook, but this is not essential.
The workshop will begin by exploring captured notes. You'll be invited to move around and contribute your phrases to a shared display, reading and reacting to the collective pool of reflections from the film.
Participants will then engage in a short period of focused free writing. Free writing is a technique where you write continuously for a set period of without stopping, editing, or censoring yourself. The goal is to let your ideas flow freely from your mind directly onto the page. You will respond to a quote or theme inspired by the film and the phrases shared collectively. This writing will form the basis for your artwork where you will build a collage that captures aspects of your writing.
You will combine found images (magazines, newspapers, patterns etc.) with some of your own written text to build a unique composition.
Keisha will introduce a technique using carbon paper to extend and transform your imagery. This is a simple process—like tracing—where you can draw on top of an image to transfer a black line drawing onto your collage or paper. This is a chance to try a new technique and is not essential.
The workshop conclude the session with a brief period of final words, thoughts, and reflections on the experience and the pieces created.
To make your artwork truly personal, please bring a few pieces of paper or photo material related to the themes of dreams and apparitions that you'd like to incorporate into your collage. This could include a photograph, a map, an old document, or a letter.
All materials will be provided for the session.
