In honour of the late Malian director Souleymane Cissé (1940 – 2025) who passed away earlier this year, we are delighted to revisit one of his most seminal works on the big screen, restored in 2K by Les Films Cissé, the production company of Souleymane Cissé. 

In the 13th century, during the time of the Malian Empire, a young Nianankoro (Issiaka Kane) is able to master magical forces, a knowledge passed down from generation to generation among the Bambara. But his father, Soma (Niamanto Sanogo) is not ready for his son to become his equal, and is plotting to kill him. To escape the murderous madness of his father, Nianankoro sets off across Mali to meet his uncle, who lives on the other side of the country.

Yeelen was the first African film to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987.
