Spotlight Geração 80: AIR CONDITIONER + Short + Q&A

  • Filmhouse Edinburgh 88 Lothian Road Edinburgh, Scotland, EH3 9BZ United Kingdom (map)

Ar Condicionado (Air Conditioner)
Fradique |  Angola | 2020 | Portuguese with English subtitles | 72m

When the air-conditioners in the city of Luanda mysteriously began to fall, Matacedo (security guard) and Zezinha (maid) embark on a mission to retrieve the boss’s AC by the end of the day.

The feature will be screened alongside short film:

Lucia in the Sky with Traffic Lights
Ery Claver | Angola | 2018 | Portuguese with English subtitles | 15m

Lucia is constantly ostracised and silenced by a sexist society that never considers her opinions, wishes or desires. She is the silent account of a woman confined to a role or function without the right to be, think or express opinions. She is merely a corporeal existence, used only to satisfy the needs and wants of others.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Geração 80 collective member and Lucia in the Sky with Traffic Lights writer/director Ery Claver, hosted by Adura Onashile.

The Spotlight: Geração 80 programme offers a rare opportunity to engage the collective’s distinctive contribution to contemporary African cinema through films that reflect their commitment to innovative storytelling, visual experimentation and authentic representations of Angolan life and culture. Lookout for the additional screenings in this programme, My Semba and Our Lady of the Chinese Shop.

Join Geração 80 for a special masterclass on Thursday 29 October.

Spotlight: Geração 80 is made possible through the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation UK Branch’ and their Gulbenkian Exhibitions Fund.
