About Jali Film Weekender
Jali Film Weekender is an annual film festival that celebrates the richness and diversity of Black, African and diaspora cinema. The programme brings an intentionally curated snippet of contemporary African cinema to Edinburgh, highlighting the breadth of stories and styles across the continent and beyond.
Featuring documentary, animation, archive cinema, a family screening, and work by diaspora artists both in Scotland and internationally, audiences are invited to engage further through post-screening discussions, workshops, Q&As and more.
The weekender offers a necessary space to platform Black, African and diaspora filmmakers, and for audiences to gather and connect, finding dialogue and community with one another, through film.
About Jali Collective
Founded in 2025, Jali Collective is an Edinburgh-based grassroots collective with the purpose to widen access to African cinema and to celebrate and elevate Black, African, and diaspora stories through film and culture. As part of this work, the Collective curates film screenings, festivals, workshops and related events that bring Black, African and diaspora cinema to audiences.
We provide a platform for Black and African filmmakers, including those based in Scotland, with a particular focus on women and other underrepresented creators, helping them showcase their work, share their stories, and connect with new audiences.
At the heart of our approach is a commitment to centring Black, African, and diaspora communities in our programming and outreach. We seek to ensure these communities have ownership, representation and a meaningful voice in shaping our activities. We also work to remove physical, social and economic barriers to participation so that a wide range of people can access and enjoy Black and African film and cultural events.
