Scottish Premiere
From the metropolis of Khartoum five Sudanese characters: a civil servant, a tea lady, a resistance committee volunteer, and two street boys all in search of freedom, have their stories unexpectedly woven together through animated dreams, street revolutions and a civil war.

The screening will be followed by an in conversation with the Khartoum producer Talal Afifi hosted by activist Rania Obead. Talal Afifi is a Sudanese film curator and producer, founder and director of the Sudan Film Factory, and the Sudan Independent Film Festival.

This screening is presented in partnership with Scottish Documentary Institute.

Talal Afifi

Talal Afifi (b. 1976, Hamburg) is a Sudanese film curator and producer. Founder and director of the Sudan Film Factory, and the Sudan Independent Film Festival.

His recent productions / co-productions include Khartoum (2025), premiered at Sundance and was awarded three awards in the Berlinale. Afifi also curated various programs and sections in film festivals in the Uk, Germany, and has served on international juries, including the International Documentary Association Award (IDA), Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund.

Alongside his curatorial and production work, he is deeply engaged in questions of archives and archival practice, seeking to preserve and reactivate Sudan’s fragile cinematic memory within broader African، Arab and international contexts.

Rania Obead Sudanese activist, member of the Sudanese Women's Union, active member of the Sudanese Community in Edinburgh.
